Nutrition Counsellor

About the role

HDDO, a non-profit, non-governmental organization implementing nutrition projects in Kunar and Nuristan provinces, is hiring Nutrition Counsellors to deliver nutrition counselling and preventive services through project-supported Sub-Health Centers (SHCs) and Mobile Health and Nutrition Teams (MHNTs). The counsellor works with mothers, caregivers and families of children under five to promote infant and young child feeding, maternal nutrition, dietary diversity, hygiene and prevention of malnutrition, in line with Ministry of Public Health standards and national protocols.

Key responsibilities

• Provide individual and group IYCF counselling, including breastfeeding promotion, complementary feeding advice and respectful handling of cultural beliefs.
• Support nutrition screening of children under five using approved tools and anthropometric measures, and refer suspected acute malnutrition to health professionals.
• Educate on dietary diversity, food hygiene, safe water and handwashing, and on maternal nutrition for pregnant and lactating women.
• Follow up on children and caregivers, reinforce feeding and hygiene messages, and refer those with worsening conditions or danger signs.
• Deliver health and nutrition education sessions, adapt to literacy and language, and use approved IEC materials.
• Coordinate with health staff, community health workers, mobilizers and WASH personnel, and take part in team meetings and supportive supervision.
• Maintain accurate counselling records, screening logs, referral registers and activity reports, and protect client confidentiality.
