MHPSS Counsellor

About the role

HDDO is implementing an AHF-funded project in Kunar and Nuristan provinces that strengthens integrated WASH and health responses for conflict- and disaster-affected communities. The MHPSS Counsellor provides accessible, confidential and culturally appropriate mental health and psychosocial support through the supported SHC in Nurgal District, focusing on displaced persons, returnees, women, female caregivers, children, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable people. The counsellor coordinates with medical doctors, midwives and other health personnel and refers those needing specialized care.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct initial psychosocial screening and basic assessments using approved, age-appropriate, culturally sensitive tools, documenting outcomes confidentially
• Provide Psychological First Aid, helping distressed individuals feel safe and calm and connecting them with health, protection and community support
• Deliver individual counselling and follow-up, and organize group psychosocial support sessions
• Give psychoeducation on stress, coping strategies and when to seek professional help, and run awareness sessions for vulnerable groups
• Integrate MHPSS into routine health and nutrition services and refer medical symptoms to qualified health personnel
• Establish referral pathways to higher-level health facilities and specialized mental health services, with informed consent and safeguarding compliance
• Support community awareness activities and work with community mobilizers, elders and local leaders
• Maintain confidential case records, prepare activity reports and report safeguarding concerns through designated channels
• Coordinate with the Medical Doctor, midwives, the Health Community Mobilizer and the project manager, and take part in supervision and training
