Field Security Support Officer – Afghanistan

About the role

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) seeks a Field Security Support Officer to assist the Field Security Officer and the Chief of Mission in managing security risks across IOM operations in Afghanistan. The role focuses on implementing safety and security procedures that protect personnel, assets, and programme activities in a highly complex environment.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain liaison with UN security bodies, government counterparts and partner security services to obtain up‑to‑date security information.
• Provide accurate security assessments and recommendations to the Chief of Mission, coordinating with the Field Security Officer.
• Develop, test and maintain a functional warden system, including SCAAN testing.
• Organise and deliver security training, briefings and seminars for staff deployed in Afghanistan.
• Coordinate travel security requirements, including road and air assessments, medical evacuations and international staff travel.
• Monitor compliance with UN Security Risk Management Measures and Residential Security Measures, participating in Security Cell Meetings.
• Support the Business Continuity Plan and develop country‑specific security SOPs.
• Supervise the Field Security Associate and oversee the Kabul Security Operations Center (SECOPS).

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Security Management, Business Administration, Political/Social Science, Psychology, Criminal Justice, Law, International Relations or related field with at least two years relevant experience, OR a university degree in the same fields with four years relevant experience.
• Minimum two years of professional experience in security risk management, preferably in conflict‑affected settings.
• Demonstrated ability to produce security assessments, briefings and training materials.
• Experience working with UN security frameworks and coordination mechanisms.
