Human Rights Officer (UNAMA) – Kabul

About the role

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) is seeking a Human Rights Officer to join its Office of the Human Rights Service in Kabul. The position is based in an "E" hardship duty station and reports to the Human Rights Officer/Team Leader under the guidance of senior staff.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Human Rights Officer/Team Leader in managing and implementing the human‑rights work plan for the assigned area.
• Plan and coordinate thematic activities, including protection of civilians, women’s and children’s rights, detainee rights, torture prevention, and monitoring of fundamental freedoms.
• Integrate UN‑developed methodology into monitoring, reporting and fact‑finding missions.
• Conduct research and analysis on protection of civilians, gender equality and other human‑rights issues based on field monitoring.
• Collect, analyse and enter gender‑specific human‑rights data and indicators into established databases.
• Develop initiatives to strengthen response to systematic or emerging human‑rights violations and formulate recommendations for remedial action.
• Ensure human‑rights considerations are integrated into UNAMA programmes, provincial offices, UN Regional Team and humanitarian actors.
• Follow up on reported incidents, verify cases and maintain quality assurance of database entries.

Required profile

• Experience in human‑rights monitoring, reporting and data analysis.
• Knowledge of gender perspectives in human‑rights work.
• Familiarity with UN methodologies and standards for fact‑finding.
