Human Rights Officer

About the role

The Human Rights Officer will be based in Mazar‑e‑Sharif, working within the Human Rights Service of UNAMA. Reporting to the Senior Human Rights Officer, the role leads the implementation of the mission’s human‑rights mandate in a challenging environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the management and implementation of human‑rights activities in the assigned area, including protection of civilians, women, children and other vulnerable groups.
• Develop and execute advocacy strategies, advising de‑facto authorities, civil society and UN partners on preventing violations and ensuring accountability.
• Coordinate the collection, verification and analysis of human‑rights cases, maintaining accurate data in the mission’s database and producing trend reports.
• Integrate gender perspectives into all programmes and support the design of awareness‑raising initiatives for national and sub‑national stakeholders.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate) in law, human rights, political science, international relations or related fields, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum seven years of progressively responsible experience in human‑rights work, including gender‑focused protection of civilians, women, children and other vulnerable groups.
• Strong knowledge of international human‑rights law, international humanitarian law and the human‑rights‑based approach to field work.
• Excellent research, analytical and report‑writing skills, with the ability to produce high‑quality briefing notes and public reports.
