Human Rights Assistant

About the role

The Human Rights Assistant will work within the Human Rights Service of UNAMA, supporting the Human Rights Officer/Team Leader in Herat and Bamyan. The role involves assisting with monitoring, data collection, reporting, and outreach activities to promote human rights across Afghanistan.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in planning and conducting monitoring, fact‑finding, awareness‑raising, capacity‑building and advocacy activities.
• Document and receive complaints on alleged human rights violations.
• Collect, analyse and visualise monitoring data; prepare presentations, reports and briefings.
• Maintain quality assurance of case data in established databases and support information‑sharing systems.
• Draft incident, weekly and monthly reports and contribute to communication materials.
• Support logistical organization of human‑rights activities, including project documents, budgets and narrative reports.
• Participate in air and road missions, attend meetings with local authorities, civil‑society and human‑rights actors.
• Map and update information on local authorities, NGOs, defenders and sources of human‑rights information.
• Monitor local, national and social media for relevant developments and suggest referrals to specialised services.

Required profile

• Ability to work under supervision of a Human Rights Officer/Team Leader.
• Willingness to travel within Afghanistan, including to detention facilities, hospitals and remote sites.
• Strong analytical mindset for data collection, analysis and reporting.
• Good communication skills for interacting with authorities, NGOs and victims.
