About the role
The Assistant Human Rights Officer supports the Human Rights Service of UNAMA, working from the headquarters in Kabul and regional offices in Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif. Reporting to Human Rights Officers and Team Leaders, the role contributes to the implementation of UNAMA's human rights mandate with a strong gender perspective.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in planning, coordinating and implementing human rights activities, including protection of civilians, fundamental freedoms, and the rights of women, children and vulnerable groups.
- Research, collect, verify and analyse information from open sources and field observations related to human rights in the mission area.
- Integrate UN‑developed methodology into monitoring, reporting and investigation processes.
- Liaise with local authorities, civil society, UN agencies and other stakeholders to monitor developments.
- Support the development of initiatives to address systematic or emerging human rights violations.
- Verify and enter human rights violation cases into databases in line with established standards.
- Plan, coordinate and conduct detention‑monitoring visits where feasible.
- Prepare data visualisations, reports, briefings and other communications on human rights matters.
Required profile
- Demonstrated experience in human rights monitoring, research and analysis.
- Ability to work effectively in a gender‑sensitive environment and promote equal participation of women and men.
- Strong written and oral communication skills for drafting reports and briefings.
- Capacity to liaise with diverse stakeholders, including local authorities and civil‑society organisations.
