Assistant Human Rights Officer

About the role

The Assistant Human Rights Officer supports the Human Rights Service of UNAMA in Kabul. Working under the Human Rights Officer/Team Leader, the role contributes to the planning, coordination and implementation of the mission’s human rights mandate, with a strong gender perspective.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in planning, coordinating and implementing activities related to protection of civilians, fundamental freedoms, and the rights of women, children, detainees, human rights defenders, media workers and other vulnerable groups.
• Contribute to integrating gender perspectives and women/girls' rights issues across all activities.
• Research, collect, verify, analyse and synthesize information from open sources relevant to human rights in the mission area.
• Apply UN‑developed methodology in monitoring, reporting and investigation of human rights situations.
• Liaise with local authorities, civil society, UN agencies and other stakeholders to monitor developments.
• Support the development of initiatives to strengthen response to systematic or emerging human rights violations.
• Assist in fact‑finding on international human rights and humanitarian law violations.
• Ensure timely entry of human rights violation cases into databases in compliance with standards.
• Plan, coordinate and conduct detention‑monitoring visits to police, intelligence facilities, provincial prisons and juvenile rehabilitation centres where feasible.
• Collect and analyse monitoring data, prepare visualised reports and briefings for decision‑making.
• Draft inputs for reports, briefings and communications on human rights matters.
• Participate in formulating recommendations and strategies to promote and protect human rights in the mission area.
