Assistant Gender Affairs Officer

About the role

The Assistant Gender Affairs Officer supports the Human Rights Service of UNAMA in monitoring and promoting the human rights of women and girls in Afghanistan. Working under the Human Rights Officer/Team Leader, the incumbent contributes to gender‑focused research, analysis and advocacy.

Key responsibilities

• Research, collect, verify and analyse information on women’s and girls’ human rights and gender equality, including open‑source data.
• Liaise with de‑facto authorities, civil society, UN agencies, funds and programmes to monitor developments and raise awareness.
• Develop initiatives to strengthen responses to systematic or emerging human‑rights violations against women and girls.
• Attend meetings with local authorities, UN entities, civil‑society and human‑rights actors, presenting gender‑related concerns.
• Support fact‑finding on human‑rights and international humanitarian‑law violations.
• Plan, coordinate and contribute to UNAMA’s human‑rights mandate activities from a gender perspective, covering civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.
• Assist with detention‑monitoring work, providing technical advice on gender equality for women detainees and juveniles.
• Collect, analyse and visualise data for reports, presentations and knowledge‑management products.
