Human Rights Assistant

About the role

The Human Rights Assistant will support the Human Rights Service of UNAMA, based in Kabul and field offices across Afghanistan. The role involves assisting in monitoring, fact‑finding, advocacy and capacity‑building activities to promote and protect human rights.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in planning and conducting monitoring missions, including visits to detention facilities, prisons and hospitals.
• Receive, document and follow up on complaints of alleged human‑rights violations.
• Collect, analyse and visualise data from monitoring activities and prepare reports, briefings and communication materials.
• Support the development and updating of informational material such as brochures and web pages.
• Attend meetings with local authorities, civil society and human‑rights defenders and help map relevant actors and information sources.
• Provide logistical support for human‑rights projects, including preparation of documents, budgets and financial reports.
• Participate in air and road missions as required and suggest referrals to specialised services.

Required profile

• University degree or equivalent experience in human rights, law, international relations or a related field.
• Willingness to travel throughout Afghanistan and deploy on short‑notice missions.
• Strong analytical mindset with the ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.

Required skills

• Excellent report‑writing and data‑presentation abilities.
• Experience with monitoring questionnaires, assessment surveys and data analysis.
• Proficiency in drafting incident, weekly and monthly reports.
