Chief of Unit, Medical

About the role

The Chief of Unit, Medical is based in Kabul within the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer for clinical matters and to the Chief of Service Delivery for administrative matters, the role combines senior managerial oversight of medical services with hands‑on clinical duties.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate the Joint Medical Services (JMS), Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT) and the Staff Counselling and Welfare Unit.
• Prepare and implement mass‑casualty and medical evacuation plans, and manage relationships with external healthcare providers.
• Oversee budgets, procure pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and consumables, and ensure proper functioning of all supplies.
• Provide day‑to‑day supervision of JMS and MERT staff, evaluate performance and interview candidates.
• Act as liaison with UNHQ, senior mission management, specialized agencies, military physicians and external medical partners.
• Deliver clinical services including clinic appointments, emergency response, examinations, immunizations and women’s health.
• Develop and deliver training programs on health education, HIV/AIDS prevention, first aid and CPR.

Required profile

• Extensive experience supervising medical staff and coordinating emergency medical response.
• Proven ability to manage budgets and procure medical supplies.
• Experience working in multinational or UN environments and liaising with diverse stakeholders.
