Assistive Technology Technical Officer

About the role

The Assistive Technology (AT) Technical Officer will support Humanity & Inclusion’s mission in Afghanistan by strengthening the availability, accessibility, quality and sustainability of assistive technology services, focusing on wheelchairs and positioning devices. The role involves market analysis, quality assurance, supply‑chain support and capacity building for local workshops.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and coach local workshops on production processes, product quality, design and fitting of wheelchairs and positioning devices.
• Review and develop technical specifications, quality criteria and production processes for priority AT products.
• Provide technical guidance on production planning, costing, pricing and business models to improve sustainability of local manufacturing.
• Deliver targeted training, on‑the‑job mentoring and practical workshops for workshop staff and rehabilitation stakeholders.
• Document findings, lessons learned and recommendations, and prepare a hand‑over package for continued work after the assignment.

Required profile

• Experience in assistive technology, rehabilitation or related technical fields, preferably in low‑resource settings.
• Ability to work closely with rehabilitation teams, logistics/procurement colleagues and external suppliers.
• Willingness to travel within Afghanistan and adapt to challenging environments.

Required skills

• Technical assessment of workshop capacity and equipment.
• Quality control and product specification development for assistive devices.
• Capacity‑building and training delivery for technical staff.
