Midwife - Maternal and Neonatal Health

About the role

HDDO, a non-profit, non-governmental organization, is recruiting a Midwife to work at a project-supported health facility in Kunar Province. The Midwife provides maternal, newborn and reproductive health services in line with Ministry of Public Health standards, the Basic Package of Health Services and approved clinical protocols, aiming to improve the availability, accessibility, safety and quality of maternal and neonatal care.

Key responsibilities

• Provide antenatal care, assess pregnancy progress, identify risks and high-risk pregnancies, and counsel on nutrition, hygiene, birth preparedness and danger signs
• Deliver skilled birth care within the facility's capacity, manage intrapartum complications and provide immediate newborn care
• Give postnatal assessments, encourage breastfeeding and early follow-up, and refer complicated cases to higher-level facilities
• Offer confidential, voluntary family planning counselling and services within the Midwife's scope of practice
• Recognize obstetric and neonatal emergencies, stabilize patients within competence and coordinate referrals
• Deliver health education on maternal, newborn and reproductive health and promote inclusive access
• Maintain accurate patient records, registers and HMIS reporting, and coordinate with the Medical Doctor and other staff
• Follow infection prevention and control measures, safeguarding and PSEA policies, and uphold patient confidentiality

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Midwifery from a recognized institution
• Valid professional registration, license or authorization to practice in Afghanistan
• At least 3 years of experience providing maternal, newborn and reproductive health services in a health facility
• Experience in antenatal and postnatal care, safe deliveries, family planning counselling and identifying obstetric or neonatal danger signs
• Previous experience with an NGO, humanitarian health project or emergency response programme in Afghanistan
