Immunization (Polio EPI) Consultant

About the role

The consultant will provide time‑bound technical expertise to sustain the quality and performance of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and the Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. This short‑term assignment supports UNICEF’s effort to maintain uninterrupted immunization activities during a temporary programme capacity gap.

Key responsibilities

• Analyse immunization and surveillance data using DHIS2, EPI dashboards, Excel and other monitoring tools to identify immunity gaps and monitor programme performance.
• Provide technical guidance on micro‑planning, supportive supervision, vaccine and cold‑chain management, surveillance, and outbreak preparedness and response.
• Support the identification and outreach to zero‑dose and under‑immunised children.
• Coordinate with the Provincial EPI Management Team, BPHS and non‑BPHS partners, and health authorities to improve programme quality and community engagement.
• Mentor frontline health workers and deliver on‑the‑job training to build technical capacity.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in immunisation programmes, preferably within EPI or polio eradication initiatives.
• Demonstrated ability to work in high‑risk, low‑resource settings.
• Strong analytical skills and experience with data‑driven decision making.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills with multiple stakeholders.
