Crime Prevention & Criminal Justice Officer – Firearms Control (Temporary)

About the role

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is seeking a temporary Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer to lead its Firearms Control activities in Kabul, Afghanistan. Reporting to the UNODC Representative for Afghanistan and receiving technical guidance from the Chief of the Firearms Trafficking Section, the incumbent will support the implementation of the UNODC Global Firearms Programme across Afghanistan and neighboring countries.

Key responsibilities

• Provide expert advice on firearms control to UNODC, Afghan authorities, UN agencies and other stakeholders.
• Monitor and assess weapons diversion and trafficking risks, including those linked to Taliban de‑facto authorities, and evaluate existing firearms governance and legal frameworks.
• Coordinate with UN agencies, regional organisations and the UN Security Council sanctions monitoring mechanisms to support enforcement of arms embargoes.
• Collect, analyse and disseminate data on firearms seizures, diversion incidents and trafficking trends in collaboration with UNODC’s Research and Analysis Branch.
• Contribute to the development, coordination and implementation of the Global Firearms Programme with a focus on illicit firearms in the region.

Required profile

• Experience in firearms control, illicit trafficking analysis or related security fields.
• Ability to work under the supervision of senior UNODC officials and to engage with multiple UN and international partners.
• Knowledge of the security environment in Afghanistan and neighbouring countries.
