Access and Safety Officer – Internal

About the role

The Access and Safety Officer will be based in the Herat Area Office and report to the Area Manager. This role supports the Danish Refugee Council’s mission by ensuring safe and secure operations for staff and programmes in a complex humanitarian environment.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain strong communication with local authorities, community leaders, and security stakeholders, acting as the focal point for safety coordination.
• Collect, verify, analyse and report information that may affect DRC operations, including political and security developments.
• Assist the Safety Team Leader in developing and updating safety plans, SOPs, Local Safety Rules, safety briefings and site evaluations.
• Provide regular safety updates and briefings to all DRC staff and monitor compliance with Minimum Operating Safety Standards.
• Maintain an up‑to‑date emergency contact list, contracts with local authorities and a register of key stakeholders.
• Support incident response, including physical site assessments and workplace safety surveys.

Required profile

• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse local actors.
• Professional conduct in line with DRC’s Code of Conduct, showing respect, neutrality and honesty.
• Experience working in humanitarian or conflict‑affected settings, preferably in security or safety coordination.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills, with attention to detail.
